Moral Education 114: Global Citizenship (1)

The Character and Morality pillar teaches universal ethical values, such as fairness, caring, honesty, resilience, tolerance and respect.

About This Course

In these two courses (Moral Education 114: Global Citizenship 1 and Moral Education 115: Global Citizenship 2), we will explore how the interconnectedness between nation-states is expressed in global governance structures and processes. We will consider some of the most challenging global issues of our time, and how inequality among nation-states has implications for decision-making about global issues, especially with regards to the challenges that vulnerable and marginalised people in the world face. We will consider how individuals and different groups contribute responsibly to decision-making about global issues, within their own contexts.

The first course looks at the basic ideas, then the second course moves on to look at significant issues and challenges.

Part of the Moral Education curriculum, this course seeks to foster in students a set of universal values, which will enable them to peacefully interact and connect with people from different cultural and social groups who hold different views and perspectives. It seeks to empower them to become active, responsible, local and global citizens. It enables them to develop mutual understanding, respect for difference and empathy in order to sustain our cohesive and prosperous society. Through dialogue and interaction, students are provided with opportunities to explore different worldviews, to challenge one another's assumptions and attitudes and to develop the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to think critically, to make informed ethical decisions and to act on them in the interests of their society.
